On Becoming Real

On Becoming Real

My favorite Christmas passage I’m sharing with you today. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas! Until next year, read romance and give all the love your heart has the capacity for. Love you all…..

Valveteen Rabbit2“Real isn’t how you are made,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.’

‘Does it hurt?’ asked the Rabbit.

‘Sometimes,’ said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. ‘When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.’

Real Isn't‘Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,’ he asked, ‘or bit by bit?’

‘It doesn’t happen all at once,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”    —The Velveteen Rabbit

I hope that all your hair is rubbed off, and your joints get loose and you get good and shabby. I hope you are loved hard, and forever.Valveteen Rabbit3

  12. Merry Christmas! Thank you for sharing one of the most important lines in The Velveteen Rabbit, my favorite book of all time (followed closely by Charlotte’s Web). I try to find this book at area bookstores each time a child is born in my circle of friends and family, but it is becoming more and more difficult to find in print. You have reminded everyone of why this is such a wonderful book to share with our latest generation of children. May your wish for us be my wish for you as well!
