REUNION – Stepping Back To The Future
I am coming up on a big reunion this summer. We were the first graduating class of Gunn High School in Palo Alto. I was one of the twelve students selected to be on a committee to set up our school. We chose our mascot, set up the Student Government, made all sorts of decisions and selected some we wanted the student body to vote on when we started in the fall.
Prior to attending Gunn, our class was split in two. Some went to Palo Alto High, and some went to Cubberly. We started our new adventure as Juniors, with a Sophomore class beneath us. By the time we graduated, Gunn had all three years in place.
There were lots of firsts that occurred, and now looking back some 50 years, I can hardly believe the time has gone so fast. It’s been fun chatting online with friends I knew way back then, reconnected with at various reunions over the years as our careers took off and our families grew. Some of us went on to do great things in politics and business and other fields.
Sadly, there are nearly twenty of us who have moved on to their next life, or so I believe. I’ve written about two of my classmates before. Naomi Solomon, who was our Valedictorian and who was giving a speech to a group of women during a breakfast fundraiser to help women re-enter the work force the day of 9-11. I watch her name come up on my TV screen nearly every year. In 2015, there was a rainbow shown over the city as her name was broadcasted and read.
Another one of our students worked for the U.N. in Algeria, “I take a little piece of California with me back to Algeria – this was one of the greatest years of my life,” he told me at our reunion ten years ago. Brought his whole family over so we could meet them. Chad was killed in the terrorist bombing in Algiers in 2007, a year later.
Rather cool that you where in the class that started your high school and you got to choose so many things. Hope you enjoy your reunion this summer that is something I've never done gone to any of my reunions but that could be cause I went to two different schools in high school
We had a unique experience, for sure. Many don't go. My husband doesn't like to. But people do fascinate me and I actually love hearing stories that show how wrong I can be about people! Just like I love the bad singers at Karaoke night (I cheer most for them).
You have been a bright and uplifting presence in my life story since we first met and became friends in junior high. This is a beautiful piece and I look forward to reading many more and seeing you again this year, my friend! <3 Bonnie McClung Chappa
Thanks so much, Bonnie. It has been a joy, and I can't wait!! Thanks for sharing my stories…I'll never forget the multiple layers of Cinnamon stockings we ought for .33 each pair, and the vinegar on our hair to bring out the reddish highlights. Oh the things we dreamt about doing!
It's so nice to reminisce, sadly we always lose people far to early. But, like my father would have said that's life. Enjoy your 50th reunion wish you many more.
Thanks, Julie. It is a celebration of life, all our lives.
I haven't attended a reunion since the five-year reunion. Even then, I couldn't remember people or events. I didn't know at the time I was dealing with CPTSD. An amazing counselor and a lot of work have improved what I'm able to remember of my more current life. What remarkable people have touched your life. Because you remember, their lives have now touched mine. Thank you for sharing them.
Ah, Judy, my memories willingly become yours and you can claim all of them you like. These people will live on, just as you and I will after our physical bodies leave this realm. How wonderful you honor me by allowing me to share…
