On Becoming Real

“Real isn’t how you are made,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.’
‘Does it hurt?’ asked the Rabbit.
‘Sometimes,’ said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. ‘When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.’
‘Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,’ he asked, ‘or bit by bit?’
‘It doesn’t happen all at once,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.” —The Velveteen Rabbit

Love that story! It is the phrase I put for my sons HS graduation! My kindergarten class class enjoyed it as well! I still have my rabbit in his stocking!

Thank you for sharing the passage from The Velveteen Rabbit. It brings back so many memories of when my children were small. I will be 76 in February, have 5 children, 12 grandchildren, and 18 greatgrandchildren. I am an avid reader, almost buried in books. lol

THIS BOOK WAS READ TO MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN AND NOW MY GREAT-GRANDCHILDREN. IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A COMFORD TO ALL OF US AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. I STILL HAVE OUR ORIGINAL COPY AND STILL CHECK IT OUT MYSELF. IT MAY BE A LITTLE WORN OK A LOT WORN BUT IT WILL REMAIN WITH ME FOREVER.

Merry Christmas! Thank you for sharing one of the most important lines in The Velveteen Rabbit, my favorite book of all time (followed closely by Charlotte’s Web). I try to find this book at area bookstores each time a child is born in my circle of friends and family, but it is becoming more and more difficult to find in print. You have reminded everyone of why this is such a wonderful book to share with our latest generation of children. May your wish for us be my wish for you as well!
